Cassie sees this house in Coopersville

Cassie drives by this house in Coopersville.

While driving through the Michigan town of Coopersville on her way to deliver Gustave’s book—and ring, Cassie sees this old American Gothic Revival house.

The depressed homes leading into town spoke of a time when Coopersville once thrived. Now the American Gothic Revival style—pointed window arches, steep center gables, and lacy trim along the rooflines—made the town seem more like the home for the wicked witch in the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel.

Gustave Wants An Impartial Account of the Trial of Lord Conwallis

An Impartial Account of the Trial of Lord Conwallis

In the story Ring: Wearer Beware, mysterious Gustave Veil (Ringman) visits C & N Book Nest and orders the rare book (pamphlet) An Impartial Account of the Trial of Lord Conwallis. Cassie is compelled to deliver it to the intriguing man’s residence. I want to know why Gustave was amused when he requested it.

It costs—in real life—around $260. Here’s what Biblio.com says:

An Impartial Account of the Trial of Lord Conwallis [sic] by Charles Cornwallis, 3rd Baron Cornwallis [Cornwallis of Eye, Charles Cornwallis, Baron] Condition: Near Fine –

London: s.n., 1679. Pamphlet. Near Fine -. [2], 12 p.; 30 cm. Signatures: [A]2 B-C2 D1 (folio). Pages are untrimmed. “4” in ink at lower edge of title page. Wing I-78. Published anonymously but attributed to the defendant, Charles Cornwallis, 3rd Baron Conwallis (1655-1698), who was tried for murder. He and another man, Charles Gerrard, while drunk and disorderly in the middle of the night threatened a sentinel (who was able to defend himself) and then two young men who were passing by. Gerrard attacked one of the young men, breaking his neck and killing him. Cornwallis was found not guilty of murder (although six of his peers found him guilty of manslaughter). In Near Fine- Condition: pages are lightly soiled.
